How to Clean a Pool Filter

Having a clean pool filter is important for having crystal clear water in your pool.

But when is a good time to clean it?

Learn from the experts at Ruva Pool Care! We have over 20 years of experience in the pool industry, and we're going to give you our tips and tricks for cleaning a pool filter!

Typically a filter is cleaned every 4-6 months, but that can vary depending on weather, ashes clogging filter due to fire, algae treatments etc.  When the pressure on your filter gauge reaches 10 psi (pounds per square inch) above the starting pressure you should clean the filter. This is typically around 20-30 psi. After the filter is cleaned, you should check the starting pressure. For example, if the starting pressure is 12psi, then you would need to clean the pool filter when the filter gauge rises to 22psi.

When we clean a filter, we inspect the filter grids, manifolds, and cartridges for any tears, cracks, and/or damages to the filter unit. The last step is to add DE powder into the skimmer. Having a clean filter will also increase the water flow in the pool.
